Sometimes, we all wish that we can just forget about politics and get on with our life. In fact, it is easy, and some of us just tuned out of politics altogether. I can’t blame them.
This is a dangerous sentiment. This sentiment is actually a disguised form of indolence. Indolence that can lead to apathy. Apathy that is dangerous to democracy.
Politics is like a religion. It is a way of life. The more we get involved, the more informed we become. It is the way we practice it that is not well.
In the family. We do not make time to talk, really talk, about politics especially with our children.
In schools. Is democracy even discussed within their walls? Conveniently, we just say, “Marcos destroyed democracy.” Marcos is gone for more than 20 years.
Reform the curriculum. Make not knowing the members of the Sanggunian Bayan the subject matter. What does the Sanggunian Bayan do? And how? Make our schools truly learning sites. Take the class to observe how laws are made. It is far more effective.
In the community. We make our differences get personal. Why? We make ourselves the issues. We run on empty.
Can’t blame them for it is us to be.
That’s what you call the I.P.I.S. mentality — indifference, passivity, inaction and subservience.
