ATM blues

This December, specifically on the week beginning December 17, automated teller machines began conking out. As the long holidays beckoned, ATM outages became common. I actually pitied BPI ATM cardholders. Their cards were next to useless.

I think it was a common sight among BPI ATMs – a piece of paper taped into the machine, telling poor BPI clients that they could only do balance inquiry and bill payments using the ATM. Some of them had paper-taped messages, telling clients of other ATM networks that they could not do any transaction using BPI ATMs. Some ATMs indeed suffered from outages, but BPI’s system clearly had problems this month. Heck, just earlier today, the BPI ATM at Araneta Square in Monumento, Caloocan had that balance inquiry-only message; nearby, a Robinsons Bank ATM was online and was serving non-Robinsons cardholders (I used my PNB card and I got money).

And to think these banks had the gall to charge for every transaction made using ATMs. They could not even serve their customers right.

Do you have any exasperating experience with ATMs this season? Blurt it out in the comments. Specially if you are a BPI account holder.

I know, not a good thing to end the year. But some things need to be said. Anyway, happy new year! May you have complete limbs by tomorrow.

Kababuyan, 3

Decide now

The year is about to end, and a new one is coming. So many things have happened, yet more remained the same. Is it time for a change?

If you are tired of what’s going on, have you done something to make things better? We are so enamored on looking for our own welfare, we forget about the others, we forget about our social and political institutions. One of them fails, and say goodbye to your own well-being. As part of this group called society, we can better serve our own welfare by making sure our institutions work. By making things better, our own life becomes better. That is why it is essential that do our own fair share.

It all begins with a conscious decision, and sticking to it. First, you must convince yourself that a better society means a better life for you. If you can’t convince yourself, then the status quo is for you and there’s no need to think further. But if you are convinced, then you must have an idea on what kind of life you are getting into. It will not be the same, comfortable, cozy, lazy life that you are used to. It demands your utmost attention. It demands time. It needs critical thinking. It means additional work.

For example, using the pedestrian overpass. On my way home, I have to cross the overpass, and walk several meters BACK to get home. Inefficient, I know. Most of us think that way, so what most of us do is to cross the street, risking our lives for efficiency. But if you meet an accident by crossing the street illegally (Heaven forbid), efficiency goes out the window. You become inefficient, heck, even inefficient PERMANENTLY.

As you can see, doing our fair share to make things better involves a conscious, critical thinking. We keep on equating efficiency with laziness that we cannot see what true efficiency means. This kind of thinking requires hard work. That is why it is a conscious decision. We cannot just decide YES. It is a conscious decision because it is a decision that we have to make every minute of our lives.

Then stick with that decision. Sticking with the decision also means convincing others to do the same. It will be more hard work, but there’s no other way of doing it.

Sticking with the decision to do your share is hard when you see others to be apathetic. It can be a real downer. But I always remind myself that if I succumb to these downers, I lose. My life will continue as it is, and I might as well migrate. But that would also mean I am a loser. I am not. You are not. Again, if you let others dictate what you will do, you will leave a comfortable life. And you will be stuck, when you can have better. Downers are there, so it is more hardwork sticking with your decision.

This is not easy. There is no guarantee of success, and you might not live long enough to see results. If you let those deter you, then you are not unlike the 80 million others. That is why we always end up in the same muck where we began. Breaking that cycle begins by making that decision. Soon, if not now.

A cautionary tale for this season

Taken from here.

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.

“What food might this contain?” the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning. “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The pig sympathized, but said, “I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow and said, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The cow said, “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.”

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the mousetrap – alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house – like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient.

But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn’t concern you, remember – when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

Merry Christmas!

Kababuyan, 2

Sabi niya, dapat manaig ang rule of law.

Throwback to the Marcos era

I can only shake my head at what is happening to Joker Arroyo. He has transformed from this to that in blink of an eye.

Typical of his current state of mind, Arroyo called Attorneys Argee Guevarra and JV Bautista “cry babies” when they filed illegal detention charges against several PNP officers. Not only is Arroyo’s comment uncalled for, it is rather sad, showing Arroyo is really losing it, as if showing us he’s going senile. It is as if he is telling us that we should no longer seek justice when our rights are trampled upon. It is as if he’s telling us to just let things be. Like let Gloria Arroyo be. Heh.

Now, I think it is safe to say that I am justified in not voting for someone whose convictions are transferable.

For several instances, I have claimed that Gloria Arroyo does not need to declare martial law, as we are already living in a virtual one.

One proof is the use of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), that vintage Marcos antique, as censorship tool. For this year, the MTRCB has rated several anti-Gloria propaganda pictures as X – not suitable for viewing, for various reasons. The most common one was used in rating two documentaries and a compilation of public service ads with X. The reason: the movies tend to “incite rebellion and sedition.” I remember a documentary about Joseph Estrada earning the same rating for the same reason. The compilations “undermine faith and confidence [in] the government and duly constituted authorities.” Another reason is that they are “too libelous and too one-sided.”

I never thought that MTRCB is a quasi-judicial body. Hell, it is not. It has no right to usurp powers that the Constitution grants to the courts of law. It has no right to say that a movie incites to sedition or rebellion. It has no right to determine if a movie is libelous. Heck, it has no right to say that a movie is one-sided. Propaganda is one-sided, and documentaries can be propaganda. The MTRCB is going out of bounds when it gave X ratings to movies that MTRCB board members see as anti-Arroyo.

Heck, I will not be surprised if it gives a GP-rating to any movie praising Arroyo even if the movie contained explicit pornographic scenes.

Remember: censorship was one of the tools Ferdinand Marcos used to silence his critics and impose his will on the Filipino people. He had to declare martial law in order to do that. This regime – well, people don’t care anyway, so there’s no need to declare martial law.

I suggest that these people post their movies on YouTube and start a viral campaign. Let’s see if there’s anything the censors can do.

PS: Here’s what a former Supreme Court justice says about the MTRCB’s X ratings.

“To stand by the side of any brother Sigma Rhoan right or wrong” yeah right!

To stand by the side of any brother Sigma Rhoan right or wrong.”

Note: JJ Ocana is a sophomore law student, and was a USC councilor maybe 2 terms ago.

Kababuyan

They were screwed. Ngayon, they are screwed again.

May washing machine, rice dispenser, kalan, telebisyon, radyo.

Bigla akong napaisip habang nakapila.

A nation of crackpots and nuts (UPDATED)

That survey that says that Gloria Arroyo is the most corrupt non-president evah, it hit ground zero. Hard. So hard, in fact, that the Fortress spin machine begun humming even before you can say “Trillanes.” Too fast, in fact, that the reaction was mumbo-jumbo of defensiveness.

First reaction? The Fortress downplayed it, saying that the survey was commissioned by former senator Serge Osmeña. Since that was not enough, here’s another: the survey was unfair, baseless, and based on perception, which is not reality, says Cerge Remonde, who also blamed the “vicious” (his word) opposition. Then, the Fortress says the respondents were too few. And another factotum said that the perception was due to a media blackout on government’s action versus corruption.

Pathetic.

Anyway, the problem with the Fortress is that they are downplaying surveys that are negative in impact for the Arroyo regime. Yet, at the tail end of the 2004 campaign, the Arroyo campaign kept on harping about Arroyo edging the late Fernando Poe Jr. at surveys. Heck, when the Hello, Garci erupted, they used these surveys to prove that Arroyo won fair, square, and Garci. This line of defense is a two-edged sword, it cuts both ways.

For the baseless, unfair, and based on perception defense, read the previous paragraph. Heh. Can’t help but giggle on this one. Imagine: surveys showing that people would vote for Arroyo in 2004 were baseless and based on perceptions. Hello, Garci!

For the third defense, read the previous 2 paragraphs. Heh.

For the fourth defense, not only this is pathetic, it is also an acknowledgement of the media’s importance and purpose. And it also highlighted the fact that its policy of blackout is wrong, short-sighted, and has caused more harm than good for the Arroyo regime.

Let’s get back to the “perception” thing. Take it away, Wikipedia:

In psychology. and the cognitive sciences, perception is the process of acquiring, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information.

Remember what Remonde said? “Sa tingin ko ay walang basis ito at of course as in all surveys lahat ay matter of perception. Ang perception is not the reality (I think the survey was without basis and of course, as in all surveys, this is just a matter of perception. Perception is not reality).” Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he has just insulted all of those survey respondents. He just insulted those who believe that Gloria Arroyo is corrupt. Arroyo’s actions of stonewalling, whitewashing, bribing, and lying do not help in perception; and for that, she only has herself, and her henchmen, to blame.

Perception not based on reality is called hallucination (or delusion, or whatever you want to call it). Is Mr. Remonde saying that those respondents were drug addicts? Is Mr. Remonde saying that those who think Arroyo is corrupt are addicts? Is Mr. Remonded admitting that this regime is helpless against drug addiction? Is Mr. Remonde saying that we are a nation of psychopaths? We are a nut republic, yay! We are a nation of crackpots, yay!

If there is someone who is delusional, its the guy who is the subject of this and that post. Read and learn.

Are Sumilao farmers about to be screwed the secondthird time around? The Secretary of Agrarian Reform is taking his own sweet time. Why can’t he just say, “I give up” and pass the buck? His passive-aggressiveness is sickening. Or maybe there’s gapangan in the background? If that’s the case, the Sumilao farmers are screwed.

Here’s a call to boycott San Miguel Foods products:

Bloggers Call for Boycotting of Monterey/Purefoods Products in support of Sumilao farmers. This Christmas season, December 15, 2007 to January 2, 2008. Bring down the sales of San Miguel Food, Inc. to show public support to the farmers of Bukidnon who were denied of their 144 hectares of land. Please pass to all bloggers.

This report shows how honorable Mr. Esperon is. There is no honor among thieves, really.

No news on Cris Mendez’ case. Long live Sigma Rho! (If you did not get the sarcasm in that, I’m sorry.)

UPDATE:

Wow, a new defense – blame the media. Heh.

Secretary to the Cabinet Ricardo Saludo held the media’s critical coverage of the Mrs. Arroyo responsible for the results, saying it “shows what happens when media publishes accusations and insinuations against the government without bothering to verify or even ask for the basis of the charges.”

Ha ha ha. Mr. Saludo, too bad I cannot salute you. You, your amo, and your fellows were given all the chance to disprove accusations and insinuations, but what did your cabal do? Stop talking and just walk the talk. Yeah, pay more congressmen, stonewall again, whitewash everything, spread more lies.

Another defense – investigate polling firms. Heh. Courtesy of the person who is the epitome of sanity in the Senate:

“I am filing a resolution tomorrow morning to investigate not only the particular survey firm but all major survey firms that have their results published in the media,” she added.

Wait, that ain’t defense – it is offense. Wow, a change in tact? W00t! (Incidentally, that l33t speak is word of the year, according to Merriam Webster.) Senator Miriam “I lied, ha ha ha!” Santiago has a beef with them survey firms. It all goes back to 1992. In any case, someone will like this investigation, as he always take these firms to task. Maybe Santiago should get this person as resource speaker.
