Objections on a Sunday Morning

In a comment posted in a blog, a person wrote, and I quote:

“That attitude of moral superiority is exactly what makes a lot of people cringe and drive away any supporters. You question my PERSONAL moral values for disagreeing with your organization? I do not question your PERSONAL moral values – or any person involved in BWM. This is the best argument you can come up with in defense of your movement, huh? Laughable.”

Precisely why we are in this rut.Isn’t moral superiority the reason that drove people to EDSA I and II? Laughable? Pathetic. And by the tone of the comment, the commenter is exercising moral superiority, no?

Again, a quote:

“I am not pro or anti GMA, I am just a citizen of this country. The company I keep is my countrymen struggling everyday for a better future.”

Filipinos are not known for having a vision – they live in one-day-at-a-time mentality. Though we cannot blame ourselves for this – it is a tough life – this is precisely why this country cannot move on. We settle for what is “pwede na”, not thinking that there is a much better alternative. That we settle for GMA – a congenital liar and a probable robber – is a problem of vision and a direct result of the pwede-na mentality. Where is the vision there? Where is the better future there?

And since the commenter insists that the anti-GMA are in the minority: the good of the few outweighs the good of the many – specially if the majority is driving this country into apathy.

(But the truth is: the good of the many outweighs the good of the few, depending on how you perceive what is good.)

And by the way, there is a difference between a citizen and a resident – a resident just resides in a country, a citizen actively participates in the conduct of civic affairs.

(And you are either PRO or ANTI. Obviously you have already prejudged the issue, by telling the members of B&W Movement to seek a therapist. Get my drift?)

Lastly:

“As I said, there is a possibility GMA won the elections which I see you do not even want to consider objectively. Surveys during that time support that fact and the oppositions’ pre-election choices confirmed it.”

As the person said, it is a possibility, A POSSIBILITY. Conversely, there is also A POSSIBILITY that she didn’t won the elections. That person is either confused or unconvinced either of the results of the 2004 elections. And the person that he or she accepts as the president is not helping him or her clear things up.

We cannot make the presidency as a strong institution if we allow it to be prostituted to the richest bidder and let it pass as it is, just because there is no alternative. It is just plain WRONG. There is always an alternative, and we are just plain lazy to look for a good one. Generalizing that all of them are corrupt is like saying you are corrupt. Can you accept that? I cannot; hence I just can’t move one unless things are cleared up. You won the election fair and square? Why is Garcillano hiding then? Is the fertilizer fund not a case of diversion of funds? How come Bolante immediately went abroad after being served a subpoena? Too much coincidences.

As my aunt always tells me, if there is no justice, there will be no peace. GMA thinks she can get away with rape. She will not have a peaceful reign until 2010. And history – and the next generations – will judge her harshly, as history has judged the other presidents, as a president who probably never was.

If your friend raped your daughter, would you move on and not press charges because he was your friend? Because it would cause instability?

DISCLAIMER: I am not part of the B&W Movement, I am not defending it, and I don’t agree to all of their aims.

  1. Arbet,

An able response. One does not have to be a member of B&W to know what is right or wrong. Keep up your critical thinking! It’s what we need in these days of indifference and apathy.
