On freedom

I used to hold that freedom is absolute. Putting restraint to freedom makes it no longer free.

In the natural state, freedom is absolute, and in such state, man is free to do what he wants, he is free to say what he wants. However, this puts man in a problem. Exercise of freedom in its natural state puts him in conflict with his fellow being. Left uncontrolled, this conflict ultimately leads to violence.

The evolution of the social contract theory led to a society agreeing to be bound to an unwritten agreement to respect each other’s property and rights. This agreement, I believe, to the social contract does not put restraint to freedom. Freedom remains absolute, but man agrees to be responsible for the exercise of such freedom.

We have evolved several means to put the social contract in force. We enact laws to list down our freedoms, guarantees to the exercise of such freedom, our responsibilities when we exercise our freedom, and sanctions when we refuse to bear our responsibilities. We have social norms that govern how we act in a group. We have values that guide our every decision, and these values we usually share with others.

One of the freedoms that we should cherish and exercise with care is the freedom of expression. What does this exercise entails?

1. Libel and slander are in our statute books to hold us responsible for the words we say and write that are either against or might be detrimental to others.

2. Persons affected by what we say should be allowed to respond to or refute our allegations/criticisms/observations.

3. Whatever adverse words we say against others will naturally cause reactions. We should be ready to listen to them, understand them, and answer them.

The response to whatever we say might be illogical, ad hominem, and foul; they are of course free to express what they feel and think.

Where does responsibility comes in? Action brings a reaction. When we exercise our freedom to the detriment of others, we should be responsible enough to face the consequences of our actions. However, responsibility is not limited to what effect our actions might have or cause. Responsibility also calls on us to think first before we act. It is not only prudent but wise not only to avoid trouble but to respect others.

Freedom is absolute, but it comes with responsibility.

The next logical step in this Malu Fernandez issue: the mainstream media taking note. But will they?

As an adjunct to Nick’s campaign, maybe we should begin informing other news organizations about the irresponsible words that Ms. Fernandez had unleashed upon the word. Otherwise, we will just limit ourselves to the confines of cyberspace. Remember, majority of Filipinos in the country don’t have access to the Web. If a tabloid takes this up, it will probably spell the difference.

UPDATE: I urge the readers to control your emotions and please watch your words. Show that you are better than her. Prove that she is wrong. You are only proving her correct by calling her names. Sure she had called you names and insulted to, but returning the favor will actually validate her assertions! Thank you.

An open letter to a friend

Hi, Ice.

First, thanks for the rather surprising email. Glad to hear from you. As much as I want to create a long reply, my brain’s dead, no thanks to stupidity, loneliness, the weather, stupidity, loneliness, the weather, wash, rinse, repeat (not in particular order).

Second, the ad is not that urgent. Don’t push yourself too hard for that. It’s not worth your health. OK?

Third, yes, I felt that I was left out, and please understand that during those times (and up to now, I guess), I was (am) one lonely person. Heck, I have almost given up looking for someone to love and instead be a best friend someone could have. But how can I be, when my own friends I don’t even know at all?

For three years, I have been thinking if what’s wrong with me. I have a family, I have a nice-paying job, yet why do I always feel lonely? I have friends, but do they really treat me as such? Why do I feel so left out all the time? Why do I always have to be the last to know? Am I not communicating right?

I always ask those questions up to now. I have no answers. Yet. Maybe there are no answers. Maybe the answers are just there, and I can’t see them yet. Maybe I’m looking at things using dark glasses. Yet time’s fast catching up on me, and I am afraid of something.

In the novelization of a Star Trek movie, there was a scene where the lead character almost died when he fell off climbing a mountain with no safety gear. He was scolded by his friends, but he said: “I know I will not die, because I have my friends with me. I know I will die alone.”

I know I will die alone. That statement has stuck in my mind. That is my greatest fear.

So I hope you understand what caused the post. I know the cause of that post was childish and stupid. I hope I have conveyed my apologies for such embarrassing juvenile remarks. It was so petty, I am scolding myself for adding to your worries, when I should be working to help you lessen your worries! What kind of friend am I! I’m so ashamed of myself!

Take care of your health. All your dreams, all the things you want to do, depend on you being strong to pursue them. Take it easy, for you have all the time in the world. It is not a race, it is a journey. Enjoy each step, for you cannot go back. When your health is no more, you cannot turn back the clock.

And lastly: treasure your friends. The true ones will stick to you through thick and thin. They will catch you everytime you fall, they will lift you up when you are down and out. Some of them will leave you, but at least you’ll know who your true friends are.

I remain, your friend,
The Prince in Hell

From one agent to another

Dear Call Center Agent,

Kaya siguro ako single for 3 years in the running.

Love,
Isa pang Call Center Agent

It’s just a show

Today, the Bureau of Customs has destroyed 18 luxury cars, upon orders of Gloria Arroyo. She was supposed to witness the event, but she was not able to come due to some problems in the backup choppers.

There are several quarters who think that it would be better to auction the cars instead of destroying them. The ideas was turned down because (1) the Commissioner claims that the cars are right-hand drive cars and conversion of such cars is illegal; and (2) Arroyo thinks the smugglers themselves might win the auction.

When I saw the TV clip of the cars early this morning, some of the cars are left-hand drive cars, so that pricks up the Commissioner’s balloon. So destroy the right-hand drive cars, and auction the others off.

Arroyo’s reasoning, however, stumps me. Why do they smuggle these cars? To avoid customs duties. So if you auction these from a base price plus the customs duties, do you think the smugglers would even join the auction? Besides, by auctioning them off with a base price plus duties, the government earns from the auction, as if the winner of the auction has paid the necessary duties and taxes, even if he is a smuggler.

And here’s the real problem. By destroying these cars, the Arroyo administration is sending a message to smugglers. Fine. But that’s just a message. Have they hailed a smuggler to court, presented a fool-proof case, and sent one to the jail? The destroy-cars-as-message is just rhetoric, like drum-beating for a phony war, which is what about to happen in Mindanao. But that is another story.

Pitiful

The Philippine Experience has posted his reaction to a magazine column by a social columnist. The column is not available online, but one blogger posted JPEG images of the column (here and here).

As much as I want to react to her ramblings, I cannot. I should say, I will not. Because if I do, this post will turn into the most virulent, and trash-talk filled post ever.

Right now, I pity two people, both of them society columnists who wrote only about who’s rich and who went to what party. They treat those who they feel are inferior to them with disdain and contempt. I pity them because what they write reflects on the shallowness of their minds, the corruptness of their souls, the emptiness of their hearts. I pity them because the more they speak up againts their fellow men, the more they lose their humanity.

The society columnist in question is one of the two. The other I had already tackled somewhere.

Two fronts

The second anniversary of AWBHoldings.com (today) is turning up to be… interesting, to say it nicely, though it does not involve this site at all.

For every major event that involves the Philippine blogosphere (or part of it), controversy always follows. Do you still remember the controversies immediately following the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards?

Now, two weeks (exactly) after announcing the Ten Emerging Influential Blogs of 2007, another controversy raged (yes, past tense, hopefully it’s over). Called the Kid Blogger Affair (superbly chronicled by Eugene), the issue has divided a part of the blogosphere (yes, I will always emphasize on that), and hopefully it was already resolved (am I kidding myself or what).

Days into the Kid Blogger Affair, another controversy has erupted and is currently raging. It’s too early how this will end, and how a part of the Philippine blogosphere will react.

Interesting indeed.

Possible Zero-Day Problem for YM (UPDATED)

Heads up for Yahoo! Messenger users. McAfee Avert Labs Blog reports about a potential zero-day vulnerability for your favorite instant messenger. While no exploit is known or is in the wild, it always pays to be extra careful.

No details are available as of this time.

(Yes, I know, it is hard to be careful against something you do not know. There are ways in keeping yourself safe. Try using Web-based YM in the meantime. Or don’t click on links being sent via YM.)

UPDATE:

McAfee Avert Labs Blog has posted an update and has confirmed the existence of the vulnerability, which involves YM Web cam. They have posted the following mitigating measures:

1. Don’t accept webcam invites from untrusted sources until a patch for this is released.
2. It’s advisable to block outgoing traffic on TCP port 5100 until the vendor patches this vulnerability. (If unsure about port blocking, just follow number 1, above.)

Another weird dream, 4

Geesh, another night of weird dreams. This time it was creepy.

In my first dream, we had this plot of land where cremated remains were interred. I saw a cousin who was about to deposit the remains of her husband. It was placed in a travel bag (which in hindsight is funny). The dream was creepy because the husband is alive and kicking as we speak.

This dream must have been inspired by my experience almost two years ago. I had the remains of a maternal uncle exhumed, cremated, and interred at a more permanent place (the lease for the previous niche was expiring at that time). I am reposting the LiveJournal entry:

This is with regards to the transfer of my maternal uncle’s remains. We had it cremated and transferred to a small place. So here are the pics.

Sealed forever in peace.

Anyway, the other dream was about seeing two churches in one place. The first one was huge, the other one was smaller. And the mass in the smaller church was unusual, using corn chips as hosts, and the altar was a folding bed. This dream must have been inspired by a twin church in Germany that I saw in KBS World.

And oh, I had not taken any medicine last night, just to preempt Joyfulchicken’s usual retort he he he.
